Our new exhibition Transitions explores the peculiar and unfamiliar place that dwells between a pre-pandemic and post-pandemic world. We will be exploring this place for our Create Club art project. Our inspiration for this self-reflection project is the photographer, Angelique Strachan and her piece, Insight! You can see Angelique’s work in our exhibition gallery here and you can take a look at the example we made for this project below!

Insight by Angelique Strachan

Materials:
● Pencil
● Any medium you want to use (paint, markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc.)
● White cardstock paper or any white paper that will work well with the medium you chose.
● An oval frame. The frame can be a wooden frame or a frame made and cut out of paper (Look at the oval frame cut out and download it). This oval frame will be a “portal” for your art piece. Note: You can find pre-cut craft frames at local hobby stores.
● A mirror. You can use a handheld mirror, bathroom mirror, etc. The mirror is what you will look at to draw yourself. For the handheld mirror you can hold it yourself or have someone hold it for you.
● Glue to attach your image to your frame.

For Our Art Piece We Used:
● An oval wooden frame
● White cardstock paper
● Oil paint
● Acrylic
● Sand and rope
Directions:
1 - View our digital exhibition Transitions, and consider the many ways that an image of a person can express identity.
2 - Look in the mirror and use a pencil to draw yourself on the white paper.
3 - Take whatever medium you chose and color the image of yourself that you just drew. In our example, we used oil and acrylic paints, and we chose to create texture with lines of different color.
4 - For the texture in our piece, we used sand, mixed into acrylic paint. For the hair, we used rope.
5 - When your image has dried, place the oval frame that you cut out on top of your paper and secure them together.
6 - The concept for this art project is to draw how you see yourself and share what you look like with others.
7 - Take a picture of your piece and share it with us using #wamcreateclub
This project is all about self-reflection and positive expression, so dig deep, get creative, and have fun!
