Depth is defined as an illusion of distance on a flat surface. For this week's art project, think of a beautiful landscape that you could imagine yourself walking into and recreate it. Create depth and distance by using diagonal lines, layering or overlapping colors or shapes, and by using objects that change in size in the foreground. This landscape can be imaginary or a place that you have been to before. We have listed the materials we used for this project, but you can add your own materials to this list.

Materials:
● Colored pencils
● Markers
● White paper
● Pencil
● Sketch paper

Directions:
1 - On a sketch paper, use a pencil to sketch what landscape you want to create. Remember, the focus of this project is on depth and dimension, so keep that in mind when choosing your landscape. You can use any of the technique mentioned above to achieve depth and dimension (eg. diagonal lines, layering, etc.). Think of the colors and shapes that make your landscape special and do your best to express those in your sketch.
2 - Once the sketch is finished, lightly draw your landscape on a separate piece of white paper with a pencil.
A Look at our Example:
In the boat dock landscape example, notice how the colors start out darker and progressively become lighter. The boats on the side of the dock also start out big and progressively become smaller. Notice the furthest boat in the sketch looks as if it is moving because of the rippling trail of water behind it. The boat dock starts out wide and gets narrower to show distance, and the shapes of the boards show the age of the dock.

This project is so fun to create, so get inspired, be creative, and have fun!
