UVU art student Bethany Allred is our highlighted artist this week. Bethany was inspired by the manmade items and materials she found in nature and combined them to create this beautiful sculpture. You can also view her artwork in the UVU Museum Student Exhibition at The NOORDA Center for the Performing Arts.

Tree of Light by Bethany Allred, from the 2023 Student Art Exhibition

Our sculpture is inspired by Bethany’s use of intertwined human-made and natural objects. Be creative about how what materials you choose and how they work together when combined.

The example provided is a tree made from recycled and natural materials. We used pieces of take-away boxes, used egg cartons, and tissue paper rolls, and added wire, rocks, and pieces of wood. We used a glue gun to attach everything together. This sculpture expresses concern for the environment and how humans relate to the earth. Check out the work of other artists who use recycled materials in their art, including Thomas Deininger, Rina Banerjee, and Robert Bradford.
Materials:
• Sketchbook and pencil
• Manmade and natural materials to create your sculpture
• Your base to hold up your sculpture (wood, clay, cardboard, etc.)
• Cutting and shaping tools (scissors, wire cutters, clay tools, etc.)
• What will you use to bind your materials together (we used a hot glue gun for the example)

Instructions:
1. First, think about the message you want to communicate through your sculpture and what form it should take.
2. Next, write a short description and sketch your planned sculpture in your sketchbook.
3. Experiment with different materials to see what will work for your piece.
4. Make notes about the materials you will need to create your work. Think about how these materials will be intertwined.
5. When thinking about your base, think about the weight of your sculpture and the materials you think would hold your sculpture up.
6. Your base for the sculpture can be made from any material (wood, clay, cardboard etc.)
7. Think of how you will attach your piece to your base (hot glue, glue, tape, clay, staples etc.)

Be creative and have fun!
