Let’s focus on nature! For centuries, artists have been finding ways to capture the beauty of nature in sketches, painting, sculpture, and photography. Artists like Mary Cassat, Claude Monet, and Winslow Homer are just a few of the artists who have famously portrayed nature in their work. Look online to learn about other artists who depict nature in their work.
Activity:Find something in nature that inspires you and capture it on paper. Museum Educator Lisa J is inspired by the clouds in the sky. She likes their different forms and the ways that clouds look layered. She took a picture to capture that inspiration and then drew what she saw. Now it’s your turn! What inspires you in nature?
Materials:
● Paper
● Pencil (colored pencils)
Directions:
● Go outside and look at the sky. Look at clouds, trees, grass, flowers, and mountains. Find something in nature that inspires you and that you would like to draw. You can also look at magazines or photos from the internet for inspiration.
● Draw what you see. You can draw in a free-flowing way, focusing on the lines that you see, or you can use any technique you like. Your drawing can be detailed or simplistic; realistic or abstract.
Take time to really see all the beauty around you. Remember, you’re the artist here! Get inspired, be creative, and, most importantly, have fun!
