Terrel Vanleeuwen reminds us all that there is beauty and love in our world with his highlighted piece, Venus and Muninn. Our activity this week is inspired by this work.
The idea is to create a pop-up line drawing, using doves as an inspiration. Doves are very popular during the holidays as a symbol of peace and love. With the holidays coming up and the unique situation we find ourselves in this year (living during a global pandemic), this project could hardly be more fitting.

Terrel Vanleeuwen, Venus and Munnin, Conte crayon on mounted watercolor paper, 2019

Materials:
● Any Christmas color of paper
● 2-3 White papers
● Pencil
● Scissors
● Glue stick
● Use bird and wing cut outs you find online or draw them yourself
● Black marker
● Sketch paper
Directions:
1 - On a sketch paper, figure out how you want to arrange your doves and figure out what designs you want to create on them. (See Terrel Vanleeuwens’ piece for inspiration)
2 - Take the print or drawing of the birds and wings and cut them out.
3 - Trace the cutouts on a white piece of paper. To make things a little easier, I folded my white piece of paper in quarters so I would only have to cut once to get several birds.
4 - Once you’ve cut out your birds and wings, use lines to create patterns and designs on them.
5 - Using your sketch as a guide, place the now designed, cut out birds on a colored sheet of paper and glue them on.
6 - Take the cut-out wings and glue a corner of it on the winged dove. Gluing them this way allows you to fold them or close them for a 3D, pop-up book look.
Remember to be expressive, get creative, and have fun!
