Roy Lichtenstein was an American artist and art professor who along with Andy Warhol and others became a leading figure in the Pop Art Movement during the mid-twentieth century. Lichtenstein is known for taking everyday objects like comic books and recreating them, making them bigger and using bold colors and big black lines. He is also known for his use of Benday dots which give artwork the appearance of being printed like a comic book or newspaper instead of painted. Take a look at his pieces entitled Whaam! and Girl in Mirror.
Activity: This exhibit is truly your creation! The idea is to get inspired by a famous pop-artist and create your own pop-art piece. In our example, Museum Educator Lisa J’s artwork was inspired by artist Robert Indiana (who did the sculpture ‘LOVE’). Use paper and other materials to create your pop-art.
Materials:
● Any material you would like to use such as markers, foil, yarn, fabric, paint and any other kind of embellishment
● Paper (plain, colored, or textured)
● Tape
● Pencil
● Scissors
Directions:
1. Find a pop-artist or style of pop-art that you like. Use this artwork to inspire your project.
2. Decide what topic you want to use for your piece. We recommend using your topic to create a pop-art graduation sign, a card for somebody special, or even a “welcome summer” banner. Be creative!
3. Using a pencil, sketch your idea on paper.4. Use materials such as markers, foil, yarn, fabric, paint, and embellishments to finish your piece. You can use a variety of materials in this project!
5. When you are finished, consider displaying your work. We used a wall to hang our artwork like in an exhibition.
Remember, you’re the artist here. Get inspired, be creative, and, most of all, have fun!
