Activity: Do you know that colors line up together in what is called a color wheel? The color wheel consists of two categories, primary and secondary colors. Artists use the color wheel to show how colors align to compliment each other and how the colors on the wheel may be combined to make new colors and shades of colors. We will make our own unique color wheel using the pages of magazines and colored paper.
Color Wheel Basics:
Primary Colors- red, blue and yellow
Secondary Colors- green, orange and purple
Materials:
● Magazines
● Glue stick
● White Paper
● Scissors
● Pen
● Pencil
● Crayons, colored pencils, paint
Alternatives: You can use any material to create your color wheel. We used used images from magazines. You can use cloth material, leaves, flowers, sticks, stickers, literally anything to depict the primary and secondary colors.
Directions:
1 - Take a white piece of paper and draw any size circle on it with a pencil.
2 - Find images in magazines that represent the primary colors of the wheel, red, yellow and blue. You may choose a red dress, a blue hat or a yellow sun.
3 - Cut out additional magazine images that represent the secondary colors, green, orange and purple.
4 - Glue the primary colors you have selected onto your circle first. Place the red image at the top, the blue on the left side of your circle, and yellow on the right side of your circle. Make sure to leave enough space between your primary colors to fit the secondary colors too.
5 - Glue the secondary colors to your circle. Glue the orange image in between the red and yellow, purple in between the blue and red, and the green in between the yellow and blue.
6 - You can label your colors as primary and secondary when you’re finished or leave it plain. (See example below)
Remember, you’re the artist here! Get inspired, be creative, and, most importantly, have fun!
