History:
Graffiti art is an expressive art form that uses spray paint to create words or pictures. Artists tag their work with cryptic messages, signs or dates next to their initials. Often, graffiti art is associated with outside spaces including building facades. Graffiti art can at times, be controversial. The work of the artist known as Bansky was originally viewed as a type of vandalism because many of the spaces where he expresses his art, are privately owned. Later, he achieved notoriety as an artist and became widely admired. Over the years, Banksy has used his platform as a graffiti artist to publicize political injustice, greed, hypocrisy, racism, and discrimination in England and around the world. His dark humor and satire can be seen on street buildings, transportation and anywhere that people take notice. Research Bansky and his work online and learn where you can see his work in Park City, Utah!

Here is an example from our permanent collection. This graffiti art piece is by Jonathan Gonzalez and Albert Anzar, spray paint on canvas 2010. To see this and other artwork in our collection, visit us online.

'Magic' by Jonathan Gonzalez and Albert Anzar, 2010, spray paint on canvas

Activity:
Make your own graffiti stencil art.
Materials:
● Paper
● Pencil
● Scissors
● Tape (painters or masking)
● Spray paint
● You can use a canvas, cardstock even cardboard to create this piece.
Directions:
● Write your name in whatever style you want on a piece of paper.
● Draw a box around your name and cut out the inside of your letters to create a stencil.
● Draw a cloud shape on another piece of paper. Cut out your cloud. Keep the frame (the outside of the paper that now has a cloud shaped hole in the middle) to use as your stencil. This cloud is going to be used to create a background behind your name.
● Draw another cloud that is bigger than your first cloud. Cut out the cloud, keeping the outside of the paper for your stencil.
● Now that you have all of your stencils cut out, spray paint your canvas whatever color you want, even multi colors!
● Let it dry completely.
● Take your biggest cloud stencil and tape it to your paper. Spray paint the middle  creating a cloud shape on your paper.
● Let it dry completely.
● Take your smaller cloud stencil and tape it inside the biggest cloud.
● Spray paint the inside of this cloud stencil.
● Let it dry completely.
● Take your name stencil and tape it inside the smaller cloud stencil.
● Be careful when you spray your letters so you don’t get any excess on your cloud.
● Let it dry completely.
● When you’re done, decorate your canvas however you want! I added splatter marks, paint slashes, and spray paint marks.

Remember, you’re the artist here! Get inspired, be creative, and, most importantly, have fun!
