George Seurat was a French artist who created the painting technique known as Pointillism. He discovered pointillism when he studied the science of optics and color. He realized that he could place tiny dots of different colors next to each other and the viewer’s eye would mix them to create a new color. Seurat’s masterpiece titled A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte took him nearly two years to complete and is made up of millions of dots of color. Also look at his piece titled The Circus.
Activity: For this week's art project, we are going to create a dessert made entirely out of dots! This process of making an art piece out of individual dots is called Pointillism. We used an ice cream cone as an example, but you can make any dessert that you want!
Materials: Ice Cream Dot Example
● Colored paper
● Scissors
● Pencil
● Painters tape
● Parchment paper (for the shape of the scoops of icecream, cone, and cherry)
Alternatives: You can also draw and color circles on a piece of plain white paper if you don’t want to use colored paper.
Directions:
● Make an outline of the dessert you want to create (in this case, an ice cream cone). Take parchment paper and use your pencil to draw an outline of a cone, scoops of ice cream, and a cherry.
● Cut out the cone, ice cream scoops, and cherry you just drew.
● Tape the parchment paper pieces of the cone, ice cream scoops, and cherry to a wall.
● Now make the dots. These dots are going to be placed all over the outlines you just made to create a Pointillism effect for your piece. Take colored paper, decide how big you want each dot to be, and draw them in pencil.
● Cut out the dots you just drew.
● Tape the dots to your parchment outline. Fold your tape onto the back of each dot so the tape does not show. You will want to have plenty of colors to differentiate the cone from the individual ice cream scoops. I taped mine from dark to light, but you can organize yours however you imagine.
● Add some decoration! For example, on the top scoop of my ice cream I cut out different colors of rectangles to make sprinkles.
● Finally, tape your cherry on top, take a step back, and enjoy your new delicious dessert! Remember, you’re the artist here! Get inspired, be creative, and, most importantly, have fun!
