For this project, we ate focusing on nature and the work of artist, Marie Cooper. Marie Cooper is a BFA students in the museum’s 2021 Student Art exhibition. Her paintings touch on the emotions we feel when we are in nature. Marie talks about her experience with nature and how it feeds her soul. To find inspiration like Marie, venture out to a park, your yard, the woods, or any other outdoor space where you focus on the emotions you feel when connected to nature.

Materials:
● Sketch paper
● Pencil
● Any colored medium (paint, colored pencils, markers, crayons)
● White paper
Directions:
1 - Find a spot in nature to sit and create your piece.
2 - Before you create, ask yourself some questions to spark your creativity. For example, look at the sample questions below:

- What am I feeling, hearing, and smelling?
- What do I see around me and what does it evoke?
- Is the air warm or cold?  What do I feel when it’s cold versus when it is hot?
- Is it windy or still and how does that make me feel?

3 - Take the pencil and sketch paper. Close your eyes and draw what you feel. Try and express what your other senses are picking up.
4 - Draw as long as you want. There is no time limit.
5 - The temperature of your surroundings (warm or cold) will help determine the colors you will use.
6 - The texture of the piece will be determined by the air flow. If it is windy, you can express the wind through rigid colored marks. If the air is still, you may use smooth strokes as you color or paint.
7 - Look up Marie Cooper’s work in our Student Art show on our website:
Remember, this piece is all about being in touch with nature and emotion, so find inspiration, be creative, and have fun.
