UVU (Utah Valley University) Graphic Designer Gareth Fry is our highlighted artist this week. You can view Gareth’s piece online as part of the Faculty Art Exhibition. His triptych, Among Fields & August Oak, is made up of three photographs from a time in his past. He later added poetry and design to capture emotions he felt when remembering that place and time: contentment, heartache, and cautious optimism.

It is hard to imagine what like was life before everyone had access to cameras to capture personal moments. While we cannot remember every moment of our lives, photographs help us to revisit the past, bringing back memories of places, times, and people, even smells and sounds. This photo collage project focuses on events that shaped our growth in a positive way.
We encourage you to explore other artists like Paula Scher, Paul Rand, and El Lissitzky for more inspiration.
Materials:
•    Sketchbook
•    Pencil and eraser
•    White paper, white cardstock art journal, any surface you want to use.
•    Images from magazines, your old photos (print copies to use for collage)
•    Any medium of your choice (watercolor, ink, colored pencils etc.)
•    Scissors
•    Glue

Directions:
1.    Look through the images you have gathered. What memories do they bring up for you? Choose a memory of a time and place that means something to you. What emotions do you associate with that memory?
2.    In your sketchbook, write down your theme. Then, write a description or poem to express it.
3.    Next, sketch your design. What images will you use to represent your memory? How will you arrange them?
4.    For the last stage of your plan, think about details. What colors will you use to tell your story? What fonts will you use for your description or poem? Note these in your sketchbook.
5.    Now you can start working on your final design. Cut out the images you want to use, arrange them on your surface, and glue them in place.
6.    Use the other mediums you chose to add design, color, and text.
The rest is up to you!
Be creative and have fun!
