This week’s art project is inspired by UVU artist Evan West’s, Child’s Play. In the same way Evan West combines “childlike creativity and refined skills learned in adulthood,” the idea of this project is to connect to our past and create a two-part artwork, one inspired by the colors and designs of your childhood, and one inspired by your life today. You will take a word, phrase, or name (like Child’s Play) and create a colorful design around it. You can use any medium and materials you like. We used the materials below to create our example.
Materials:
● Sketch Paper
● Two Cardstock or Printer Papers
● Markers
● Pencil
Directions:
1 - On the sketch paper, write some words, phrases, or names you might want to use for your artwork. Think about what colors you want to use and draw what you might want it to look like.
2 - On the white cardstock or white paper, draw out your idea.
3 - Use the markers and trace around the word/phrase you chose.
4 - Use the markers to build color around the words. Our example is an 80’s throwback, so we’ve used bright 80’s colors and designs.
5 - Take the same word/phrase you used for the 80’s piece and update the design to something more modern. You can update it by changing the colors you use, changing the font, and changing how you use space.
Remember, this piece is all about combining your childhood with your present, so get inspired, be creative, and have fun!
