Photographer Angelique Strachan’s piece Portal from our Transitions Exhibition is our inspiration this week. Her photo shows us the natural world, using a mirror as a “portal” to take us to different aspects of it. Our project this week is to create a similar kind of “portal” that mirrors our personalities and our interests. Where Strachan uses clouds in her “portal”, we will use cut outs of various things that represent us. Follow the directions below and use our example piece as a reference.
Materials:
●    Frame Cut-Out (“Portal”)
●    Black Construction Paper (Silhouettes)
●    White Cardstock or White Paper (Background)
●    White Paper (Templates)
●    Sketch Paper
●    Pencil
●    Scissors
●    White Pencil or White Crayon (To Trace Our Silhouettes).
Directions:
1 -  View our digital exhibition, Transitions. Look at Angelique’s piece Portal and the placement of the clouds for inspiration.
2 - On the sketch paper, write down some of your interests and some of the things that make you the kind of person you are.
3 - Next to the words you wrote down, sketch a picture that describes that word.
4 - Using the sketches as a reference, draw the pictures you want in your final piece on a piece of white paper. This will be a cut-out that you will use as a template for your silhouettes.
5 - Cut-out the drawings.
6 - Place the drawings on black paper.
7 - Trace the drawings with the white pencil or white crayon on the black paper.
8 - Cut-out the tracings on the black paper.
9 - These are the silhouettes for your “portal” piece.
10 -Place the silhouettes on the white cardstock or white paper in a way that tells a story.
11 -  When you are happy with how it looks, glue the silhouettes on the white cardstock or white paper.
12 - See the image below for the frame cut-out. Print the frame. If you don’t want to use our frame or don’t have a printer, you can draw a frame yourself on white paper.
13 - Cut-out the printed frame or frame you made and place it on top of your piece.
14 - When you like how the frame looks, glue it on.
15 - Cut-out any excess white paper that sticks out past the frame.
This project is all about self-reflection and positive expression, so dig deep, get creative, and have fun! Share your “Silhouette Story” with us or with friends and family!
