Activity: In Jason Millward’s video he talks about how to cut hard stones like Granite and Marble. For this project, we are going to carve on soap; a soft object where you can practice the carving skills he teaches. Soap is very forgiving. When you make a mistake, take your shavings, add water, and rub the soap in the water to reattach it to the form. Think about the pieces you will be cutting off and need before you start. Use your imagination and have fun!
Materials:
Soap
A paring knife, pumpkin carver, butter knife or spoon
Cardboard, paper, or a placemat (to catch your shavings and keep your area clean).
Sketch paper
Pencil
Marker
Directions:
1 - Think about what you would like to carve. Sketch your idea on your scratch paper and imagine different variations.
2 - Take your soap and use a marker to create the outline of your sketch.
3 - Take your cardboard, paper, or placemat and lay it out on a flat surface (ex. a table, hard floor or outside).
4 - Place your soap on the cardboard, paper, or placemat.
5 - Take your soap and start carving over the paper with the carving tool you chose. Carve slowly, thinking about how much pressure you are putting on the soap so it doesn’t break.
6 - Make sure to take a step back every once in a while to evaluate your progress and envision any necessary changes.
7 - You can use your finger to smooth any edges or use your tool to rough up your edges, if that’s the look you’re going for. It’s up to you!
Take a picture and share it with us at the museum!!!

Remember, you’re the artist here! Get inspired, be creative, and, most importantly, have fun!
